Next Generation of Environmental Monitoring

چکیده

Federal and state agencies have begun using residual genetic information taken from the environment—environmental DNA or eDNA—to help make management regulatory decisions. Environmental can provide water, soil, air samples about living parts of ecosystems with unprecedented scope, in some cases providing broad surveys species present others pinpointing hard-to-find species. However, standards for analysis interpretation only recently to arise nascent field eDNA analysis. As this new valuable source begins influence implementation environmental laws, we survey existing federal uses review requirements relevant natural resource management—in particular, under data-hungry Endangered Species Act National Policy Act. We find that are already data, and, most part, these likely meet legal controlling statutes regulations. Though legally acceptable, social factors degree which a technology becomes widespread agency practice. future scenarios uptake offer recommendations driving broader adoption useful enabling decisions grounded as data source.

Next-generation monitoring of aquatic biodiversity using environmental DNA metabarcoding.
Global biodiversity in freshwater and the oceans is declining at high rates. Reliable tools for assessing and monitoring aquatic biodiversity, especially for rare and secretive species, are important for efficient and timely management. Recent advances in DNA sequencing have provided a new tool for species detection from DNA present in the environment. In this study, we tested whether an enviro...
متن کاملTWC-SWQP: A Semantic Portal for Next Generation Environmental Monitoring
We present a semantic technology-based approach to emerging environmental information systems. We used our linked data approach in the Tetherless World Constellation Semantic Water Quality Portal (TWC-SWQP). Our integration scheme uses a core domain ontology and integrates water data from different authoritative sources along with multiple regulation ontologies to enable pollution detection and...
متن کاملNext Generation GRIDs for environmental science
GRIDs technology has developed from first generation, supplier-specific and configurationspecific systems through second generation systems providing metacomputing facilities over various underlying platforms. The 2.5 generation added facilities for fast data transfer (GRIDFTP) and directories (LDAP). The third generation embraced from the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) community the idea of s...

متن کاملSEMAT — The Next Generation of Inexpensive Marine Environmental Monitoring and Measurement Systems
There is an increasing need for environmental measurement systems to further science and thereby lead to improved policies for sustainable management. Marine environments are particularly hostile and extremely difficult for deploying sensitive measurement systems. As a consequence the need for data is greatest in marine environments, particularly in the developing economies/regions. Expense is ...
